Major Snow: The Wisdom of Preservation, The Promise of Renewal

Updated:2025-12-07 浏览次数:

According to ancient records, "Major Snow is the solar term of the eleventh lunar month. 'Major' signifies abundance." By this time, the snow falls heavier, and the cold bites deeper.

During Major Snow, heaven and earth complete their most profound "Preservation." Rivers freeze into silence, the earth draws in its breath, and beneath the mantle of pristine white, all creation settles inward. This is not an end, but existence in another form. Like a dormant seed—outwardly still, yet inwardly amassing the power to pierce the soil.

We, too, should embrace this wisdom of "Preservation." Perhaps the true meaning of winter lies in teaching us the art of "Pause." To halt our rushing steps, allowing both body and soul to find rest. Reading by the hearth, or chatting over warm wine, we let the year's experiences slowly settle.

At this time, the warmth of hearth and home feels most inviting. As the saying goes: "Pickle greens in Minor Snow, cure meat in Major Snow." Under the eaves of every home, cured meats sway in the wind and frost, slowly mellowing with the flavor of time. Hidden within these humble foods lies the unadorned philosophy of the Chinese people: to prepare for the warmest reunions during the coldest of days.

As the farming adage goes: "A timely snow promises a good harvest." Like a thick quilt, the deep snow shields the winter wheat, only to melt later into the spring waters of the coming year. The true meaning of winter's gifts is often only understood when spring arrives—for many of life's hidden reserves require time for fulfillment.

Following Major Snow, the longest night of the year draws near. Yet, with the Winter Solstice in sight, the seeds of Yang energy are already stirring deep within the earth's core. It is in the deepest reaches of the night that the dawn begins. This mirrors life itself—the most arduous moments often harbor the greatest turning points.

This solar term reminds us: True strength lies not in perpetual advance, but in knowing when to build reserves and when to wait. To harbor hope amidst the silence, and to sustain warmth within the bitter cold—this is the deepest wisdom of winter, and the truest resilience of life.

May you, in this winter:

Possess the wisdom of preserving, and the patience of waiting;

Rest in the stillness of the present, and trust in the blooms of the future.

Though the world is clad in white, may spring lie green in your heart.

——Peace and Joy on Major Snow.
