Jiangsu, situated in the southeastern coastal region of China, stands at the forefront of the country's reform and opening-up policies. It is one of the fastest-growing, most open, and vigorous areas in China.
Jiangsu, historically renowned as a "a land flowing with milk and honey" and a "prosperous region", stands as a significant economic powerhouse and the cradle of modern industry in China. Spanning 100,000 square kilometers, Jiangsu constitutes roughly 1% of the nation's total land area. Home to a permanent population of 85 million, it accounts for about 6% of China's total population. In 2023, Jiangsu's GDP reached 12.82 trillion yuan, contributing 10% to the national economy and consistently ranking second among all provincial-level regions in the country.
Jiangsu is a province rich in cultural heritage, boasting a history that spans millennia. It is home to renowned attractions such as the Classical Gardens of Suzhou, the Confucius Temple in Nanjing, and the Slender West Lake in Yangzhou. The province is interlaced with numerous rivers and lakes, with the Yangtze River and the Grand Canal being its most significant waterways. The cultural landscape of Jiangsu is diverse and multifaceted. The Wu culture is centered around the cities of Suzhou, Wuxi, and Changzhou. Then there's the Chu-Han culture, with Xuzhou as its heart. The Jinling culture is rooted in Nanjing, while the Huaiyang culture radiates from Yangzhou and Huai'an. Additionally, the coastal cities of Lianyungang, Yancheng, and Nantong are the hubs of marine culture. Together, these distinct cultural spheres contribute to the profound and rich cultural tapestry of Jiangsu.
Jiangsu is a leading province in education, with a long-standing tradition of valuing scholarly pursuits and the cultivation of talent. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Jiangsu produced the highest number of top scholars in the imperial examination for literary subjects (68 out of 212 nationwide). In contemporary times, Jiangsu continues to excel, boasting the highest number of academicians from both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences among all provinces. Over 100 academicians currently live and work in Jiangsu. The province is home to approximately 15,700 educational institutions, including 172 higher education institutions, ranking second in the nation. Currently, these institutions collectively enroll over 16 million students. Notably, 263 disciplines from 38 universities in Jiangsu are ranked in the top 1% of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), the highest number in the country. Furthermore, 36 disciplines from 15 universities are in the top 1‰ of ESI, ranking second nationwide. Jiangsu has been at the forefront of educational openness. In the past five years, the province has welcomed 175,000 international students from 185 countries, making it one of the leading destinations for foreign students in China. Additionally, Jiangsu hosts 202 China-foreign cooperative educational institutions and programs, placing it at the forefront of the country in this regard.
