Approved by the State Council, Suqian was established in July, 1996, with an area of 8,524 square kilometers and a population of 5.92 million. It is known as "hometown of aquatic products", "hometown of famous wines" and "hometown of flowers". The Hometown of the Conqueror Xiang Yu, Capital of Chinese Liquor and the City of Water are special name cards of Suqian.

Suqian is a city with long history and profound culture. Suqian is one of the centers of biological evolution. The fossils of gibbons found in Suqian, dating back to 10 million years ago, are the earliest anthropoid fossils ever found in Asia. About 50thousandyears ago, Xiacaowan man lived and thrived in this city during the late Paleolithic age, which makes Suqian one of the centers of biological evolution and human origin in the world. The Shunshanji site uncovered in Jiangsu, which can be datedbackto8000 years ago, added at least 1,600 years to Jiangsu’s history of civilization. With more than 2,700 years of history, Suqian is an important birthplace of Chu and Han culture. It is also the hometown of Xiang Yu, King of Western Chu.
