Suzhou is a famous historical and cultural city in China, a scenic tourism city, and a national high-tech industry base, as well as one of the important key cities in the Yangtze River Delta. Suzhou boasts both the beauty of gardens and the charm of landscape. The ancient city was founded in 514 BC and has remained at the same site for over 2,500 years. Nine classical gardens have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and seven items, including Kunqu Opera, have been listed as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Suzhou is renowned as the hometown of over 50 imperial examination top scorers (zhuangyuan) and as a city of academicians, with more than 140 contemporary academicians from Suzhou inducted into the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
