Situated in the northwest of Jiangsu Province, Xuzhou City has jurisdiction over 2 county-level cities, 3 counties, 5 districts, 1 national economic development zone, and 1 national high-tech zone. It has a total area of 11,765 square kilometres, ranking the second in Jiangsu Province, and a registered population of over 10.35 million, ranking the first in the province. In 2023, its regional GDP totalled about RMB890 billion yuan, ranking 28th among cities in China.

Xuzhou is a national historical and cultural city. It used to be one of the 9 states of ancient China, with the city itself built more than 2,600 years ago, which is the earliest in Jiangsu. It is the hometown of Peng Zu (the forefather of the culinary and health-preserving culture of China), Liu Bang (the founding emperor of the Han dynasty), and Xiang Yu (the king of the Chu State who contended with Liu Bang’s Han army for power). The Three Wonders of the Han dynasty, namely, Han tombs, terracotta warriors and horses, and stone reliefs, are well-known both at home and abroad, hence the saying that one need only come to Xuzhou to revel in the Han dynasty culture. 

Xuzhou is an important comprehensive transportation hub in the country. Known as the “Thoroughfare of Five Provinces”, it’s a major node city along the Belt and Road, where the two railway trunk lines, namely, Beijing-Shanghai Railway and LianyungangLanzhou Railway, converge here. Its double-crossed high-speed railway hub offers direct access to over 180 cities in 6 directions of the country, while Guanyin Internmatonal Airport has been approved as a national first-class air port. Besides, the threedimensional transportation system comprising highways, railways, waterways, aviation, and pipeline transportation is constantly improving. 

Xuzhou is the central city of Huaihai Economic Zone. As HEZ’s regional centre defined by the State Council, Xuzhou is blessed with a vast hinterland of 100,000 square kilometres and a huge market of 66 million people, with the city’s comprehensive strength, core competitiveness, and development influence constantly improving.
