Yancheng

Seated on the west coast of the Pacific Ocean and facing eastward to the Chinese Yellow Sea, Yancheng occupies the largest area among all prefectural-level cities in Jiangsu Province. The city covers a land area of 17,000 km2 and sea area of 18,900 km2 and has a residential population of 6.7106 million. 

The city boasts a time-honored history and splendid culture. Established over 2,000 years ago, Yancheng, literally meaning the Salt City, had been dependent on sea salt production to thrive and prosper and was therefore, named after “salt”. The city is home to Fan Zhongyan Dyke, a water conservancy construction to the benefit of generations built by Fan Zhongyan (989- 1052), a prominent statesman and literary figure in the Northern Song Dynasty. It is also where Shi Nai’an (1296-1372) accomplished Outlaws of the Marsh, one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature.

Yancheng is an open and inclusive city with convenient transport. The city has four national Category-I ports, including Nanyang International Airport and Yancheng Port and a well-developed modern transport system comprising high-speed railways, airlines, and highways. It takes only 1.5 hours from Yancheng to Shanghai and 4 hours to Beijing by high-speed railways, and 70 minutes to Seoul (ROK) by air. Yancheng has now established twinning relations with 15 cities in nine countries, including Japan, the ROK, the US, and Germany. 

Yancheng is a strategic industrial city with solid industrial foundation. It is now witnessing accelerated clustering development of leading industries such as automobile, new energy, and electronic information, and fast growing of emerging industries such as energy conservation and environmental protection, big data, and marine biomedicine. The value of its agricultural output has exceeded RMB 100 billion. The city’s regional GDP of 2023 stood at RMB 740billion (USD 100 billion), ranking 38th among 337 prefectural-level cities in China. 

Yancheng, reputed as the wetland capital, is now advancing green development. The city, favorably endowed by nature, is home to three eco-systems—wetland, ocean, and forest. It has a coastline stretching 582 km and tidal lands measuring 455,000 hectares. The city is famous for two national natural reserves for red-crowned cranes and Milu deer. And its Yellow Sea Wetland has been titled as a World Natural Heritage site. Currently, Yancheng is promoting green and low-carbon development and making targeted efforts to build itself into a city of ecology, green manufacturing, green energy and livability, showcasing its development dynamism and charm as an international wetland city and a coastal green city.
