Zhenjiang
Zhenjiang, sitting at the intersection of the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal and the Yangtze River, is an important port, industrial, commercial and tourism city in the Yangtze River Delta Region. It has successively won many national honorary titles, including National Civilization City, National Historical & Cultural City, National Advanced City of Science and Technology, National Ecological City, National Garden City, National Forest City, National Environmental Protection Model City and China Excellent Tourism City, and has won the China Human Settlements and Environment Award. The total area of Zhenjiang is 3,840 square kilometers, and the number of permanent residents registers at 3.22 million.
Zhenjiang is also a city with long history and splendid culture. It has a recorded history of over 3000 years. In the Yuan Dynasty, the Italian traveler Marco Polo (1254-1324) visited Zhenjiang. Pearl S. Buck (1892-1973), the winner of the 1938 Nobel Prize in Literature deemed Zhenjiang as her Chinese hometown. Today, the former residence of Pearl. S. Buck and the Museum of the Korean Provisional Government still exist and are well preserved here. Zhenjiang is home to nine higher education institutions and over twenty technical and vocational schools, including Jiangsu University, Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, and Jiangsu Vocational College of Agriculture and Forestry, housing more than 100,000 students on campus, including over 3,000 overseas students.
The industries of Zhenjiang are very distinctive and full of vitality. The two pillar industries of Zhenjiang are high-end equipment manufacturing and new materials, and the output of each industry exceeds 100 billion yuan (about 15 billion US dollars). Meanwhile, its characteristic industries are developing rapidly, such as aviation and aerospace, intelligent electric and marine engineering equipment, etc. Zhenjiang is known for the production of fragrant vinegar and eyeglasses, and has been awarded the titles of “the Capital of Vinegar of China” and “the Production Base of Eyeglasses of China”.
In 2023, Zhenjiang's GDP reached 526.4 billion yuan and the general public budget revenue 32 billion yuan. The per capita disposable income of urban and rural residents reached 64,602 yuan and 35,466 yuan respectively.
