JESIE Open Day---Wangzhuang Experimental Primary School

The second round of Wuxi Open Day lessons launched with a wave of foreign teachers descending on the premises of Wangzhuang Experimental Primary School. Despite the over-hanging clouds with endless supplies of rain, the grade 6 students were up-beat and excited to meet their English teachers for the day.

In the first classroom, Georgina took the helm with Rooms in a house. The students were already adept in naming the rooms and so Georgina went on to explain to them what is done in each room. Following a list of instructions, students were soon able to say, I read a book in the lounge, I cook in the kitchen, I do homework in the study and I sleep in the bedroom.

In order to reinforce the language skills they had just learned, Georgina led the class in a series of games. These included tic-tac-toe, a dizzy write-off between boys and girls, and an excitement-filled game of snakes and ladders. It was a close competition, but the boys were victorious at the end of the games.

Next door, Daniel too had a class of grade 6 students. His topic was Animals, and he focused on mouse, giraffe, eagle, panda, wolf and monkey. After going through the names and pictures of the animals, Daniel quizzed the students on their knowledge of the animals natures, asking questions like Which animal is lazy? Which animal likes to climb?

After doing a round of asking students which is their favourite animal, Daniel started his games to reinforce the language he had taught. Things were kicked-off with a rapid fire competition where students from opposing teams had to see who could identify the named animal quickest by hitting the correct picture. This was followed by a round of Chinese Whispers and a hilarious session of charades. Students were then provided with information like I like cheese. I dont like cats. Im a  and they had to guess which animal was being presented.

When the music chimed at the end of the lesson, both classes were terribly disappointed that their time was over. A good time was had by all, and credit must be given to Georgina and Daniel for a successful and productive Open Day session.
